Platform Common Services Reinstall question

Hey guys!

So, we had an issue (long story) at a customer and long story short, we need to reinstall the PCS services to get things back to normal.  Following the user guide, it tells you WHAT msi to run, and that's great.  However, when you get to the installer portion, it gives you two options; the PCS Runtime, and the PCS Service Repositories, which is de-selected by default.

My question is - when should you install just the runtime vs both?

Thanks much

-Phil

  • I think I answered my own question.  Looking in with Modify instead of install:

    GR: Service Repository included

    everything else - just runtime.

Thanks Phil! Great answer.  You['re welcome, Phil.

  • Great question Phil! And answer!

Good to see you both got that sorted out.

What I have learned there should only be ONE PCS Service Repository in your network, the rest of nodes should be Runtime only.

This was stated by several Techsupport engineers in several of our PCS related support cases. Would really like to gain deeper understanding on why and how this works, and the effects if you do this anyway.

Since trainingrooms don't cause my network to break (where each node has their own PCS Service Repository), I would guess it is only true for a group of nodes using the same System Management Server. Would also be interesting to know, what happens to this if you set up a redundant pair of System Management Server,  would that require both to have the PCS service Repository or are they not dependent. If not, and there should only be one, what happens to the system if this node goes offline.

  • A follow up question to your Answer Richard
Is it possible to set up a redundant pair of SMS?

  • Hi Ulrik,

As far as I know, there is no way to set up SMS in a redundant pair.
You can have redundant Historians, License Servers, SSO (Single Sign-On), Engines and Data Acquisition (IO Connectivity).

We still lack the possibility for redundant GR Nodes, SMS and Device Integration through PCS.

  • Hi Richard, i think redundant SMS is possible ? i see that setting on Configurator, redundant GR Node is not possible i think

  • Hi Rainer,
If you are referring to the Redundant SSO Configuration checkbox, then this only relates to the SSO (Single Sign-On) features, I have not found a way to set up the full System Management Server in a redundant pair. But there might have been something I overlooked, Aveva keeps adding features and services related to this so its not impossible that there are new possibilities. Slight smile

A GR has no possibility to be set up as redundant, in the early days of System Platform it was even claimed that you could live with a system without a GR Node once everything is deployed, I would say this is not entirely true any longer, mostly because the GR Node has been given so many new responsibilities that if it is disconnected you will have several different services that fails. SMS among one of them (SMS is of course possible to install on a different dedicated node).

But with proper backups and verified routines for recovery you should be able to restore a system with out to much downtime or effects on a running system.
