Does creation of PI Tags use licensed tags? Whats the meaning behind tag creation?

Hello,

I am little confused regarding PI Tags and Points.

As far as i know, it is possible that Connectors create PI Points in the data archive. Those points count as licensed points.

In the AF i can create tags by ticking "tag creation" in the Attributes settings window and reference a Pi Point from the archive to the Attribute.

Do those tags count as a licensed PI Point? And whats the meaning behind "tag creation"?

I havent got it yet. Maybe someone can explain this to me.

  • Hello  ,

"PI Points" and "PI Tags" or just "points" and "tags" but also the less commonly used "streams" are different terms referring the same thing, a data item in the PI Data Archive.

The "tag creation" option usually is checked with the Attribute Template belonging to a certain Element Template in the AF Library. When you create a new Element based on an Element Template and Attribute Template(s) have the "tag creation" option checked, the creation of a PI point will be attempted. Every PI Point existent in the PI Data Archive will count against the licensed Stream count - no matter how it was created.

  • It's possible to create tags through Asset Framework, the purpose of which is to use templates to manage the Points. This makes it easier to manage and deploy new / updated tags with ease for similar assets. Since the Points are created on the Data Archive, they are treated no differently than any other point.
