Query on installing PI System in a domain server environment Hello everyone, I am in the process of implementing PI System and I am having some doubts about the structure needed for its installation. I currently have 2 machines available and I would like to know if the configuration I am planning is viable, or if it is necessary to add a third one.

My idea is the following: - Machine 1: Domain server (domain controller with Active Directory).

- Machine 2: PI Server (including PI AF, PI Data Archive, etc.) and the OPC interfaces.

My questions are: 1. Is it advisable to install PI System (PI Data Archive, PI AF, etc.) on the domain server (Machine 1)? I have read that there may be problems, but I am not sure.

2. In case it is not possible or advisable, would it be necessary to have a third machine to separate the domain server, the PI server and the OPC interfaces?

3. How necessary is it to have a **domain** for PI System to work correctly? What happens if I do not have a domain configured? Does it affect the performance or security of the system in any way?

Any advice would be very helpful as I want to make sure I have a stable infrastructure from the start.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello  ,

    1. Please do not install the PI System on the Domain Controller. I would go as far as, please do not install any PI software on the DC. If you like to use e.g. PI Interface for Performance Monitoring monitor the health of your DC, please install it remotely and provide read access on the DC's Performance Counters to the Interface service account (domain account or gMSA).
    2. Please consider installing PI Interface for OPC DA on another, additional host. PI Buffer Subsystem can also be enabled on the PI Data Archive host but there is usually no value as no data will be collected nor buffered when the host needs to be restarted to complete Windows OS patching.
    3. PI System security builds on Windows Security and requires Active Directory.
